A local treasure hunt with a twist

How about a day trip along some of Boston’s most beautiful bike corridors with a stop at the Arnold Arboretum, before dashing south for some technical trails, swimming, and single track at Blue Hills Reservation before breezing back to Boston along the seacoast at sunset?

The route starts near Inman Square at Broadsheet coffee, where you can enjoy a fine light roast, breakfast sandwich, and cardamom cinnamon roll. A breakfast fit for a champion.

From the Jamaicaway bikeway you’ll pick up trails through the west side of the Arnold Arboretum, exiting at Roslindale Village where you’ll take some suburban streets to the Stony Brook Reservation.

The route sticks to the paved path through Stony Brook, but there are plenty of trails if you’re looking for something more technical. Check out the abandoned zoo if you enjoy graffiti and a taste of the bygone era of outdoor zoos.

There is a convenience store on your right as you pass under the tracks at Readville - this is a good place to grab water and a quick snack as lunch is a long ways away at mile 26.

You’ll pick up easy going trails in Neponset Reservation that lead by an abandoned highway.

There are some gas stations south of Royal Street if you’re in trouble, otherwise continue on to the Blue Hills where you’ll encounter some climbing, then reward yourself with a swim at Houghton’s Pond.

When you’ve had enough beach time, take the paved road uphill to the Tucker Hill path, which leads to some fast downhill single track on the other side of Chickatawbut Rd.

The Neponset River Reservation Trail will deliver you to your lunch destination at Steel & Rye where you can find lunch sandwiches, pastries, coffee, and a selection of adult beverages. Call ahead if it’s dinner time.

Enjoy a breezy ride north along the coast, and if you have time take the detour around Pleasure Bay and Castle Island - say hi to the folks fishing!

Bike lanes leading through the North End deposit you in Paul Revere Park where you can catch skaters popping kick-flips next to Boston Sand & Gravel - a sight to behold.

The ride finishes up at Aeronaught Brewery where you can enjoy a frosty beverage on the patio, and it’s acceptable to bring take-out from one of many local joints. Favorites include Veggie Crust and Himalayan Pizza in Union Sq.
